Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Pokémon's Level?
In Pokémon GO, a Pokémon's level is represented by a bar that fills up in the shape of a semi-circle above your Pokémon. When completely empty, the Pokémon is level 1, but when full, the Pokémon is the highest level it can be, which changes based on the trainer's level.
From Trainer Level 1-40, a Pokémon's level cannot be higher than your Trainer Level. From Trainer Level 40-50, a Pokémon can be powered up to level 50.
Every power-up increases a Pokémon's level by half, so it takes two power-ups for a Pokémon's level to increase by one.
How to Find Your Pokémon's Level
There are three methods to get a Pokémon's level, some more accurate than others.
The most accurate way to get your Pokémon's level is by tapping on the Power Up button, hitting the minus button, and then continue tapping the minus button, counting the number of taps it takes to get to zero. Divide this number by two, then subtract it from your current level (or 50 if above trainer level 40).
The cost to power up a Pokémon can be used to estimate a Pokémon's level.
It can be difficult to determine a Pokémon's level from this in-game visual precisely, but it can be a quick way to get a ballpark idea.
What are IVs?
Individual Values, abbreviated as "IVs," are permanent stats given to your Pokémon. In Pokémon GO, Attack, Defense, and HP are the three possible IVs, each with a value of 0-15.
How to Find a Pokémon's IVs
To find your Pokémon's IVs, you'll need to look at the appraisal chart and read some values. From your Pokémon storage, tap on a Pokémon, then tap on the menu button in the bottom right. Select "Appraise" to display your Pokémon's IVs as a bar chart. Each IV has a value in the range 0-15.

Combat Power, abbreviated as "CP," is a numeric value representing the strength of a Pokémon.
You can find a Pokémon's CP above their image in your Pokémon storage, when viewing a Pokémon's information, and even on the catch screen before you catch the Pokémon.
