Pokémon Types
List of Types
Types are attributes of Pokémon and Pokémon moves that affect their damage in battle. A Pokémon can have one or two types, while a move can have only one type.
The power of a move is affected by both the move type and the Pokémon’s type(s). By comparing the type of the move and the defending Pokémon (see the type chart below), we can determine how effective that move will be and how its power will be affected. It is important to consider the strengths and weaknesses of your type matchup to secure victory in battle. Read our full Type Effectiveness Guide for more information.
History of Pokémon Types
As the Pokémon world evolves, more Pokémon types are discovered. Starting from Generation 9, there are now 18 standard types and 1 unique type called Stellar. The first 15 types were introduced in Generation 1, with Dark and Steel making their debut in Generation II. The Fairy type was introduced in Generation 6. And most recently, the Stellar type was introduced in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: The Indigo Disk DLC, adding a fresh twist to the game.
In the Spin-off Games
In other Pokémon games, types exhibit distinct behaviors from those in the main series.
In the Pokémon TCG, there are currently only 10 types, with the 11th type, Fairy, being discontinued in early February 2020 with the release of the Sword & Shield Base Set.
Pokémon Go has all 18 regular types; however, the effectiveness multipliers differ from the main series games.
Pokémon Type Chart
Here's a chart that shows which types of attacks are effective against which types of Pokémon. The types of attacks are listed on the vertical axis, while the types of Pokémon are on the horizontal axis. When you hover over a cell in the chart, you can see more information.
