How to Get Master Balls

Master Balls are extremely rare and can only be obtained through Special Research. There are no repeatable methods to acquire Master Balls like those with the other, more common Poké Balls.

Master Balls were made available in Pokémon GO on May 22, 2023, via the Special Research, "Let's GO!"

There have been four Special Researches rewarding Master Balls.

  • Let's GO!
  • Master Ball
  • Masterwork Research: Catching Wonders
  • Masterwork Research: Master Ball

How to Use Master Balls

To use Master Balls in Pokémon GO, players must first encounter a Pokémon to catch by tapping on a Pokémon on the map, completing a raid or Max Battle, or as a reward from certain Research Tasks.

Tap the Poké Ball in the bottom right and select Master Ball. A confirmation screen will appear, forcing the trainer to confirm they really want to use the Master Ball.

Because Master Balls are a guaranteed catch, there's no Curveball Throw or target circle. Upon throwing the Master Ball, an animation sequence plays.

When to Use Your Master Ball

There are two primary use cases for the Master Ball in Pokémon GO.

  • A Legendary or Ultra Beast raid encounter with perfect IVs.
  • A Galarian bird encountered via Daily Adventure Incense.
